Linux Mint Announces Hibernation Re-Implementation and New System Apps

Quick Report

Linux Mint is reintroducing hibernation support and adding a set of new system tools aimed at improving energy management and overall usability. The project says the new implementation is a better fit for real-world laptop behavior, especially because suspend can sometimes leave systems with phantom battery drain and inconsistent wake behavior.

The change includes a dedicated GUI option in the system administration tools for enabling specific hibernation settings, alongside a simplified update to the distribution experience. Mint is also introducing a new system monitor called Superlight, which gives a high-level overview of CPU, memory, disk, network, and I/O usage without the visual noise of more complex monitoring tools.

A further user-facing change is the replacement of the stock Gnome terminal with Velocitty, a cleaner terminal experience with tabs, quick tab overview, and easier theming. Taken together, the update reads like a pragmatic push to make Mint feel more polished for mainstream users without drifting away from the Ubuntu base it depends on.
