Linux Foundation Survey Finds Quality Concerns in AI-Assisted Pull Requests

Quick Report

A Linux Foundation Research survey found that maintainers estimate about 25% of incoming open-source pull requests are low-quality submissions associated with generative AI. The estimate reaches 31% for larger projects, even as 59% of maintainers say contribution volume has grown.

The findings present a mixed picture: respondents reported productivity gains of up to 50%, but AI adoption is outpacing project rules. Only 35% of projects have a formal policy permitting generative AI, while 32% have no policy and no plans to create one. The report points to review, testing, and clear disclosure policies as practical ways to manage the extra maintainer workload.
