Tuxedo Pauses Snapdragon X Elite Laptop Linux Development

Tuxedo stopped its Snapdragon X Elite laptop project due to platform maturity issues: missing drivers, BIOS tooling, virtualization, and poor battery life.

Tuxedo Computers has stopped work on a planned Snapdragon X Elite-powered Linux laptop, citing multiple development obstacles including missing drivers, a lack of BIOS tooling under Linux, poor battery performance and incomplete virtualization support on the platform.

The company explained that while some features (like video hardware decoding) are technically possible, the system overall did not reach the maturity needed for a retail release. Tuxedo noted that BIOS updates from Linux were not viable for deployment and that fan, virtualization and high-speed USB4 support were also lacking on the first-generation X1E platform.

Tuxedo pointed out that battery life — a key value proposition for Arm-based notebooks — proved subpar under Linux and that continuing development would have required several more months, leaving the hardware close to being outdated with the imminent arrival of Snapdragon X2 Elite. Rather than ship a product that would quickly be superseded, the company opted to pause the project.

Importantly, Tuxedo has committed to contributing any device tree and kernel work they completed to the mainline Linux kernel and left the door open to resuming development if the platform matures and the upstream tooling improves.
